If you've ever looked at a bag of coffee and seen the word "Kona," you might have wondered what makes it so special. Kona coffee has built a reputation as one of the world's most recognizable coffees, and after trying it myself, it's easy to understand why.
So what exactly is Kona coffee?
Where Does Kona Coffee Come From?
True Kona coffee is grown on the western slopes of Hawaii's Big Island in the Kona District. The combination of volcanic soil, warm temperatures, regular rainfall, and higher elevations creates ideal growing conditions for coffee plants.
Because the Kona growing region is relatively small, authentic 100% Kona coffee is produced in limited quantities. That scarcity is one of the reasons it often comes with a higher price tag.
What Does Kona Coffee Taste Like?
One of the things I like most about Kona coffee is how smooth it is.
Instead of tasting overly bitter or burnt, Kona coffee is often balanced with notes like:
- Chocolate
- Caramel
- Honey
- Toasted nuts
- Light citrus
- A naturally sweet finish
Every harvest is a little different, but smoothness is one of the qualities people consistently associate with Kona coffee.
Is Kona Coffee Better Than Regular Coffee?
That really depends on what you enjoy.
If you like bold, smoky coffee, Kona may seem a little more delicate. If you enjoy coffee that's balanced, smooth, and easy to drink every day, Kona is definitely worth trying.
The biggest difference isn't that Kona comes from a different type of coffee plant. It's still Arabica coffee. What makes it unique is where it's grown and the conditions that help develop its flavor.
What Is a Kona Blend?
Since authentic 100% Kona coffee is limited, many roasters create Kona blends by combining Kona coffee with other premium Arabica coffees.
A well-made Kona Blend captures the smooth, approachable character that Kona coffee is known for while making it much more affordable for everyday brewing.
Why We Offer a Kona Blend
Our Kona Blend has become one of my favorite everyday coffees because it's smooth, balanced, and incredibly versatile.
We infrared roast every batch to create a clean cup with lower acidity and a rich flavor that works well whether you're making espresso or your morning pot of coffee.
We also offer multiple grind sizes, so you don't have to wonder if you're buying the right coffee for your brewer. You can order our Kona Blend as:
- Whole Bean
- Espresso Grind
- Drip Coffee Grind
- Pour-Over Grind
- French Press Grind
- Cold Brew Grind
That means whether you're pulling espresso shots, brewing a French press, or using an automatic coffee maker, your coffee arrives ready to brew.
My Final Thoughts
I didn't know much about Kona coffee before I started working in coffee. Like a lot of people, I assumed it was mostly hype because of the name.
After learning more about where it's grown and, more importantly, tasting it, I understand why people love it. It's simply a really smooth, enjoyable cup of coffee.
If you're looking for something balanced that you can drink every morning without a harsh or bitter finish, Kona coffee is a great place to start. And if you're looking for an everyday option, our infrared roasted Kona Blend gives you that smooth experience while supporting meaningful employment for individuals with disabilities through Butler Coffee Lab.
